Six decisions, in the order you meet them

Some of these choices are easy to revisit. Others lock in once the window closes.
The health plan and your HSA
Price a typical year and your worst realistic year under each plan, using Progressive's 2027 premiums and your own claims history. For 2027 the HSA limit is $4,500 for self-only coverage and $9,000 for family coverage, plus $1,000 at 55 or older.
The FSA, if you choose the traditional plan
A health FSA pays predictable medical, dental and vision costs with pre-tax dollars, and whatever you don't spend by the plan's deadline is forfeited. Build the election from expenses you can predict.
Life insurance
Size what your family would need before choosing a multiple of salary. Group premiums can rise with age and with every raise, so compare the group election with individually underwritten level term coverage.
Disability coverage
Basic coverage replaces 40% of base salary, up to $10,000 a month. Gainshare and RSUs aren't counted, so the benefit replaces less of your total pay than the headline percentage suggests.
Your 401(k) and the Spillover account
Progressive calculates the match each paycheck, and it applies to Spillover contributions too. Once your pre-tax and Roth deferrals reach the IRS limit, the Spillover account lets you keep saving after tax and convert to Roth.
The December EDCP election
If you're eligible, you choose how much of next year's Gainshare and stock awards to defer, and how the money will be paid out. These elections generally can't be revoked once the window closes.

When each decision comes due

The EDCP has its own window after benefits enrollment closes, which leaves a few weeks to settle the rest first. The team at Tempo has worked with stock-eligible employees at Progressive for years.

Questions from the checklist

Work through these before you submit your elections. If you can't answer one with confidence, that's usually the decision most worth a conversation.
Health insurance and HSA
Have I compared the total cost of each plan in both a typical year and a worst-case year, including premiums, out-of-pocket maximums, and HSA tax savings?
Life insurance
Have I projected my total supplemental premiums through retirement across each five-year age band, including salary increases?
Disability
Do I know my true replacement rate as a percentage of total compensation, not just base salary?
401(k) and Spillover
Does my pre-tax and Roth mix reflect my expected tax bracket in retirement, including EDCP payouts and RMDs?
Executive Deferred Compensation Plan
What percentage should I defer, and what does that look like at multipliers of 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0?
Coordination
Are my beneficiary designations current on my life insurance, 401(k), HSA, and EDCP?
