Six decisions, in the order you meet them

Your RSU vesting will drive your 2027 tax bracket, and that changes the value of nearly every election you make.
The medical plan and your HSA
SpaceX offers up to five medical plans, depending on where you live. Price a typical year and your worst realistic year under each one once 2027 rates are out. The 2027 HSA limit is $4,500 for self-only coverage and $9,000 for family coverage, plus $1,000 at 55 or older, and SpaceX's own contribution counts toward it.
The FSA, if you choose the EPO or a PPO plan
A Health Care FSA pays predictable medical, dental and vision costs with pre-tax dollars. You re-elect it every year, and if you're moving to the HDHP, a balance left on December 31 can delay your HSA contributions until April.
Life insurance
Basic coverage is one times base pay, up to $200,000. Voluntary coverage is priced in five-year age bands, and new or increased coverage needs Evidence of Insurability, so price it against an outside level term policy.
Disability coverage
Long-term disability pays 66.67% of base pay, up to $10,000 a month. RSUs aren't counted, and the 2026 plan lists no buy-up, so the benefit replaces far less of your total pay than the headline percentage suggests.
Your 401(k) without a match
There's currently no company match, so the case for contributing rests on the tax treatment. SpaceX's 2026 guide still prints the 2025 limit of $23,500. The 2026 limit is $24,500, so check that your percentage reaches it.
Your SpaceX equity
RSU withholding at the flat 22% rate can fall well short of a 35% or 37% bracket. Decide how much SPCX you want to hold, whether you need a 10b5-1 plan for early-2027 sales, and how you'll handle ESPP shares.

When each decision comes due

The lock-up ends a few weeks after benefits enrollment closes, so the tax and selling decisions land right on top of the benefits window. The team at Tempo has worked alongside SpaceX employees for years.

Questions from the checklist

Work through these before you submit your elections. If you can't answer one with confidence, that's usually the decision most worth a conversation.
Health insurance and HSA
If I live in California, have I accounted for the state taxing my HSA contributions and earnings?
Life insurance
Since new or increased voluntary coverage requires Evidence of Insurability, have I priced an outside level term policy for the same amount and duration?
Disability
Do I know my true replacement rate as a percentage of total compensation, not just base pay?
401(k)
Is my contribution percentage set to reach the actual 2026 limit, not the 2025 figure printed in the guide?
SpaceX equity
Have I estimated the tax gap between RSU withholding and my actual liability for 2026 and 2027, and planned estimated payments?
Coordination
Are my beneficiary designations current on my life insurance, 401(k), and HSA, and do my estate documents reflect the post-IPO value of my SpaceX shares?
